UWA Softball Falls to Saint Leo, 5-2

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - West Alabama's softball team took a 5-2 loss to Saint Leo at the Gulf Coast Classic Friday evening at Flagler Field. The Tigers dropped to 4-3 overall. 
 
Saint Leo used its five hits to score five runs to claim the 5-2 win over UWA.
 
UWA only had four hits in the matchup. Kelsie Gilliam, Taylor Clegg, Riley Sullivan, and Karley McDaniel each tallied a hit. Clegg collected two RBIs. 
 
The Lions jumped to a 2-0 start in the bottom of the first inning. Neither team scored in the second. The Lions pushed two more runs across the plate in the third inning and one in the fourth inning to gain the 5-0 lead.
 
The Tigers' only two runs of the game came in the fifth inning. Clegg doubled, bringing McDaniel and Sullivan home. Neither team scored the remainder of the game, allowing the Lions to claim the 5-2 win. 
 
Saint Leo's pitcher Kayla Betts (3-0) picked up the win. She gave up two earned runs on four hits and struck out 14. 
 
Madison Wright (2-2) was tagged with the loss. Wright allowed two hits and two earned runs. She struck out two and walked three. 
 
The second game of the tournament against Eckerd was canceled due to field conditions. As of now, there is no set schedule for Saturday's games.
