Tigers Sweep UWG in DH, Wright Throws No-Hitter in Game Two

CARROLLTON, Ga. - West Alabama's softball team claimed two Gulf South Conference wins in the doubleheader against West Georgia Saturday afternoon at University Softball Field. The Tigers won the first game 7-5 and shutout the Wolves 8-0 in the second game. 
 
"I am proud of how gritty our team played today," head coach Stephanie Defeo said. "We had timely hitting in the first game and dominated game two. Mynard threw extremely well, and Maddie Wright was phenomenal! I am so proud of our team effort today!"
 
Game One
The Tigers used seven hits to score seven runs in the 7-5 win over UWG in game one of the doubleheader. 
 
Kelsie Gilliam tallied two of the seven hits. Taylor Clegg, Ann Marie Stanbridge, Hannah Mynard, Eleanor De Block, and Kori Young each had a hit. 
 
UWG pushed two runs across the plate in the second inning, giving the Wolves the 2-0 lead. UWA responded by scoring three runs in the third inning. Stanbridge singled, scoring Gilliam. Bases were loaded, and Emily Cowart and Young were both hit by a pitch, allowing Stanbridge and LP Trammell to score. 
 
In the fifth inning, Mynard hit a home run, giving the Tigers a 4-2 lead. Stanbridge's sacrifice fly scored Sara Fargo in the fifth inning, extending the lead to 5-2.
 
The Wolves scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, tying the game at 5-5. In the seventh inning, Riley Sullivan reached first on an error by center field, allowing Young and De Block to score. The Tigers held off the Wolves in the bottom of the seventh, allowing UWA to claim the 7-5 win.
 
Mynard picked up the win in the circle. She scattered 10 hits, gave up four earned runs, struck out eight, and walked five over seven innings of work. 
 
Marissa Thompson (0-1) was tagged with the loss. She gave up two earned runs on five hits and struck out two. 
 
Game Two
Madison Wright (4-2) threw a no-hitter in the 8-0 shutout in the second game of the doubleheader. Wright gave up no earned runs and struck out 11 over six innings pitched. 
 
Trammell started things off in the second inning with a home run. Mynard doubled in the third inning, scoring Stanbridge, Gilliam, and Karley McDaniel, jumping to a 4-0 lead. 
 
Stanbridge hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning, extending the lead to 6-0. The Tigers added two more runs in the sixth inning. Mary Grace Sheffield scored on a wild pitch, and Gilliam reached first on an error by UWG's third baseman, scoring Fargo. Wright held the Wolves in the sixth inning and closed out the game with an 8-0 win.
 
Katie Morris absorbed the loss. She gave up six earned runs on five hits, struck out four, and walked three over five innings of work. 
 
The Tigers close out the series on Sunday with a single game against UWG. First pitch is set for 11 a.m. CT at University Softball Field.
