Tigers Split First Day at Gulf Shores Invitational

GULF SHORES, Ala. - West Alabama softball team split the first day of the Gulf Shores Invitational by defeating Spring Hill 2-1 and dropping game two to Saint Leo 9-6.
 
Game One
The Tigers opened the season with a 2-1 win over Spring Hill in game one of the tournament. Right handed-pitcher Madison Wright (1-0) claimed the win for the Tigers. She gave up one earned run on three hits, struck out four, and walked three over seven innings. 
 
Both teams scored a run in the first inning. Kelsie Gilliam reached first on an SHC error. Gilliam stole second and third, then was able to cross the plate for the Tigers. 
 
Hannah Mynard hit a homer in the third inning to take the 2-1 lead. Pitching dominated the rest of the game as both teams could not push across any more runs, allowing UWA to claim the 2-1 victory. Taylor Clegg and Mynard each had a hit. 
 
Game Two
The Tigers dropped game two of the tournament to Saint Leo, 9-6. Mynard hit a two-run homer in the first inning to gain the 2-0 lead. The Lions scored a run in the second inning, trimming the Tigers' lead to 2-1.

The Tigers responded in the third inning with three runs. 
Gilliam scored the first run off a sacrifice fly from Clegg. Ann Marie Stanbridge followed up with a two-run homer, driving home Clegg. The Lions scored five runs in the sixth inning and three runs in the seventh inning to close the game out with a 9-6 win over the Tigers. 
 
Eleanor De Block (0-1) was tagged with the loss, pitching 1.1 innings. Mynard gave up five earned runs on eight hits, struck out four, and walked one over 5.2 innings of work.
 
Haleigh Thomas (1-0) claimed the win for the Lions. She didn't give up any earned runs and struck out six. 
 
The Tigers are back in action on Saturday at 10 a.m. against Florida Tech on day two of the Gulf Shores Invitational, followed by a single game against North Georgia at 3 p.m.
