Tigers Fall to Rollins Before Shutting Out Lander to Close Out Gulf Shores Invitational

GULF SHORES, Ala. - West Alabama softball team closed out the Gulf Shores Invitational with a split. The Tigers fell to Rollins 8-6 before shutting out Lander 8-0 in five innings Sunday afternoon at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex. The Tigers are 4-2 on the season. 
 
Game One
The Tigers dropped the first game of the tournament 8-6 to Rollins. UWA had five hits, six RBIs, and scored six runs. Kelsie Gilliam had two hits, while LP Trammell, Emily Cowart, and Leah Beth Stewart each had one. 
 
Madison Wright (2-1) absorbed the loss for the Tigers. She gave up six earned runs on five hits, struck out two, and walked two over three innings of work. Rollins' pitcher Ashely Worrell claimed the win. She gave up two earned runs on two hits, struck out five, and walked two. 
 
Rollins scored six  of its eight runs in the third inning. The Tars scored another run in the fourth inning to extend the lead to 7-0. Neither team scored in the fifth inning. 
 
In the sixth inning, the Tigers scored all six of their runs in the game. Bases were loaded when Ann Marie Stanbridge walked, allowing Mary Grace Sheffield to score. Sheffield pinch-ran for Sarah Fargo. Trammell also walked, bringing home Gilliam. Young was hit by a pitch, allowing Stanbridge to cross the plate. Stewart singled, bringing in Trammell. Riley Sullivan scored Cowart to trim the Tars' lead to 7-6. 
 
Rollins scored one more run in the sixth inning, stretching the lead to 8-6. UWA could not score any runs in the seventh, allowing the Tars to defeat UWA 8-6. 
 
Game Two
UWA pounded out nine hits to shutout Lander 8-0 in five innings in the second game of the tournament. 
 
Taylor Clegg led the Tigers from the plate. She went 3-for-3, collected an RBI, and scored a run. Stanbridge had two hits and three RBIs. Trammell, Hannah Mynard, Eleanor De Block, and Kori Young each had a hit. 
 
In the first inning, UWA had a double from Trammell, bringing Clegg across the plate to start the game off 1-0.
 
UWA had a big second inning, pushing five Tigers across the plate. A single from Young drove two Tigers home, De Block and Fargo. Clegg's bunt brought Sydnee Pawlak home. Stanbridge singled, scoring Clegg and Young, stretching the Tigers' lead to 6-0.
 
Stanbridge started things off in the fourth inning with a double, driving in Clegg. Mynard scored in the fifth inning off an error by Lander, allowing the Tigers to claim the 8-0 victory.
 
De Block (1-1) claimed the win for the Tigers. She did not give up any runs and struck out two over three innings of work. Mynard also did not give up any runs and stuck out two over two innings of work. 
 
The Tigers head to St. Augustine, Florida, on Friday to open up the Flagler Tournament. UWA's first game will be against Emory and Henry College at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, followed by a game against Saint Leo at 6:30 p.m.
