Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Tigers End Season at NCAA Division II South Regional Tournament

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - West Alabama men's basketball dominated the first half, but Alabama Huntsville rallied in the second half to come away with a 72-56 win over the Tigers Sunday evening in the semifinals round of the NCAA Division II South Regional Tournament at Rick Case Arena.

"It hurts right now," head coach Nick Woodruff said. "It has been a good run this year, but it is always sad and tough when it comes to an end. This has been an unbelievable group to coach and a fun team to be around. They compete like no other team I have seen before."

"We had three returners that came back from last year, and I can't say enough about Justin Allison, Shardarrion Allen, and CJ Melton," Woodruff added. "They made it easy for me to coach this year. If you look up the winner in the dictionary, pictures of those three guys will be there. They are winners."

"I told these guys at the beginning of the year to leave it better than you found it, and that was going to be a tough task from last year's team; however, they did leave it better than they found it. I am super proud of everything this team has accomplished this season."

The Tigers ended their season with a 27-6 overall record under Woodruff in his third season. UWA was the 2023 GSC Regular Season Co-Champions and the 2023 GSC Tournament Champions.

Allison led the Tigers with 17 points, four rebounds, and three steals. Thaddeus Williams posted 13 points and three assists. Melton had seven points and seven rebounds. Allen also chipped in seven points and grabbed six rebounds. Kuran Garner and Terry Durham each had five points and eight rebounds. Peter Turay added two points.

The Tigers came out hot in the first half, outscoring the Chargers 35-27. UAH went on an 11-0 run to start the second half, taking the 46-38 lead. The Chargers did not give up the lead for the remainder of the game, closing it out with a 72-56 win.

UWA shot 30.4 percent (17-of-56) from the floor, 36 percent (9-25) from beyond the three-point line, and 81.3 percent (13-16) from the foul line. UAH went 51 percent from the field (26-51), 43.5 percent from beyond the arc (10-of-23), and 83.3 percent (10-12) from the free throw line.

Alabama Huntsville dominated the inside, outscoring the Tigers 28-14 in the paint. The Chargers turned the Tigers' 17 turnovers into 25 points.

Chaney Johnson posted 23 points and three rebounds for the Chargers. Max Shulman had 11 points and seven rebounds.
