Men’s Tennis Defeats No. 9 Lee University in a GSC Match

CLEVELAND, Tenn. – West Alabama men's tennis team defeated No. 9 Lee University in a Gulf South Conference match, 5-2, Saturday afternoon at DeVos Tennis Court.
 
"The Lee men are a top ten team," head coach Jeff Beaman said. "This is a huge win especially at their place."
 
The Tigers improve to a 9-4 overall record and 5-2 in conference. The Flames are 7-2 overall and 2-1 in conference play.
 
In doubles play, on court No. 2 LU's Groenendijk brothers defeated Ilari Vesanen and Ilia Dehodiuk 6-4. Lucas Hammond and Marcel Hornung defeated LU's Nico Ramirez and Francisco Faria 6-3 on court No. 1. Wilson Igbinovia and Nuutti Jokinen defeated LU's Wihan Van Der Merwe and Drew Johnston 6-4 on court No. 3 clinching the doubles point for the Tigers.
 
In singles play, Vesanen was defeated by LU's Nico Ramirez on court No. 1, 6-4, 6-2. Jokinen defeated LU's Francisco Faria 7-5, 6-2 on court No. 2. Hammond clinched the overall win for the Tigers, by defeating LU's Quinn Groenendijk on court No. 5, 6-4, 6-2. Igbinovia defeated LU's Jordi Dasi in three-sets on court No. 3, 4-6, 7-6, 6-3. Loic Danze was took down by LU's Wihan Van Der Merwe, 6-3, 7-5 on court No. 4. On court No. 5, Dehodiuk defeated LU's Drew Johnston 3-6, 6-4, 10-6.

The Tigers return to the court on Thursday for a GSC match against Auburn Montgomery. The first serve is set for 2 p.m. at AUM Tennis Complex in Montgomery, Alabama.
