Tiger Softball Sweeps Shorter in DH

LIVINGSTON, Ala. - West Alabama's softball team claimed the first two wins of the Gulf South Conference three-game series against Shorter. The Tigers defeated the Hawks 4-1 in the first game of the doubleheader and 13-1 in the second game Saturday evening at UWA Softball Complex. 
 
The Tigers improved to 25-8 overall and are now 16-4 in GSC play. The Hawks are 4-30 overall and 1-18 in the conference.
 
Game One
UWA defeated Shorter 4-1 in game one of the doubleheader. 
 
Madison Wright (14-6) claimed the win in the circle. She gave up an earned run on four hits and struck out eight over seven innings of work. 
 
In the first inning, the Hawks doubled to push one run across the plate to take the 1-0 lead. LP Trammell stole second while Kelsie Gilliam scored to tie the game at 1-1. Mary Grace Sheffield singled, scoring Riley Sullivan to take the 2-1 lead. Ann Marie Stanbridge homered in the third inning, and Hannah Mynard homered in the sixth inning to close out the game with a 4-1 win.
 
Shorter's pitcher Alana Loyd (3-9) was tagged with the loss. She gave up four earned runs on four hits and struck out four. 
 
Game Two
The Tigers used 11 hits to score 13 runs in game two of the doubleheader to claim the 13-1 win over the Hawks. 
 
Hannah Mynard (6-1) picked up the win in the circle. She gave up one earned run on three hits and struck out three in the five inning run rule win. 
 
Gilliam led the Tigers with three hits. Taylor Clegg, Stanbridge, and Sullivan tallied two hits. Trammell and Emily Cowart each had one. 
 
The Tigers scored two runs in the first inning to start the game. In the second inning, UWA pushed seven runs across the plate to take a 9-0 lead. Clegg, Stanbridge, and Sullivan hit a home run in the second inning. 
 
In the third inning, Trammell singled, scoring Gilliam. UWA scored three runs in the fourth inning. Gilliam reached first on an error, scoring Sullivan. Clegg then hit a two-run homer. Mynard held the Hawks in the top of the fifth inning to close the game out with a 13-1 run rule win. 
 
The Tigers close the GSC series against Shorter on Saturday at noon at UWA Softball Complex.
