Women's Tennis Wins Third Straight GSC Tournament Championship Title After Defeating UWF 4-0

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The West Alabama women's tennis team won its third straight Gulf South Conference Tournament Championship title after defeating West Florida 4-0 Saturday afternoon at Lagoon Park. 
 
"It was a great job by the woman today," head coach Jeff Beaman said. "The match was a lot closer than the actual score."
 
"I am very proud of every member on this team," Beaman said. "It was very special for Yurie to come back and clinch the match as a senior."
 
The Tigers improved to 19-5 overall. The Argonauts dropped to 14-9 overall. 
 
In doubles play, Haina Franco and Ming Deewajee defeated Aline Midori Silva and Carlota Verdu on court No. 1, 6-1. Heden Ly and Hardija Vidnere defeated Mayumi Saguchi and Guadalupe Martinez on court No. 3, 6-4. The Takanishi sisters went unfinished.
 
In singles play, Franco defeated Mayumi Saguchi on court No. 1, 6-1, 6-4. Deewajee defeated Jenna Svatos on court No. 6, 6-2, 7-5. Y. Yurie Takanishi clinched the overall win for the Tigers on court No. 2, defeating Carlota Verdu, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2. Courts No. 3, No. 4, and No. 5 went unfinished.

With the win, the Tigers will get an automatic bid into the NCAA Division II South Region Tournament. The NCAA Selection Show will air Monday at 7:30 p.m. CT on NCAA.com.
