UWA Wins GSC Series Against West Florida

PENSACOLA, Fla. - West Alabama's softball team defeated West Florida 9-1 in the final game of the Gulf South Conference Sunday afternoon at UWF Softball Conference. With the win, the Tigers won the GSC series.
 
The Tigers improved to 33-11 overall and are now 20-7 in GSC play. The Argonauts dropped to 19-19 overall and are 11-15 in the conference.
 
UWA used seven hits to score nine runs. Emily Cowart and Riley Sullivan led the Tigers from the plate with two hits each. Both Tigers hit home runs. 
 
In the first inning, the Tigers pushed three batters across the plate off Cowart's three-run shot. Hannah Mynard then doubled, scoring Sullivan to take the 4-0 lead. 
 
UWF scored its only run of the game in the bottom of the first inning off a sacrifice fly to trim the Tigers' lead to 4-1. 
 
Cowart's second hit of the day was a double that scored Kailey Hunt in the third inning. Hunt pinch ran for Ann Marie Stanbridge. The Tigers extended the lead to 5-1.
 
The Tigers scored three runs in the sixth inning. Kelsie Gilliam scored, and Sullivan hit a two-run homer, scoring Karley McDaniel. McDaniel pinch ran for Cowart. Mynard scored the final run of the game off of Madison Wright's sacrifice bunt. 
 
Wright (20-7) picked up the win in the circle. She gave up one earned run on four hits and struck out two batters over six innings. 
 
Montana Young (11-7) absorbed the loss. She gave up five earned runs on five hits and struck out two over 2.1 innings of work. Alayna Lowery relieved Young and pitched 2.2 innings, giving up three earned runs and striking out three. Jeya Prasad pitched one inning and gave up an earned run.  
 
The Tigers are back in action on Wednesday as they face Tuskegee in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at TU Softball Field.
