Tiger Softball Takes Down Union 13-5 in Five Innings

LIVINGSTON, Ala. - West Alabama's softball team defeated Union University 13-5 in a Gulf South Conference five inning run rule win Friday evening at UWA Softball Complex.
 
The Tigers improved to 36-11 overall and are 21-7 in GSC play. The Bulldogs are 24-21 overall and 13-12 in the conference.
 
UWA pounded out 11 hits. Emily Cowart tallied three hits and had three RBIs. Ann Marie Stanbridge, Hannah Mynard, and Riley Sullivan had two hits. Sullivan led the team with four RBIs.
 
The Tigers scored three runs in the first inning to take the 3-0 lead. UWA had a big second inning, scoring five runs. Cowart hit a two-run shot, and Sullivan hit a home run to take the 7-2 lead. 
 
In the fourth inning, Sullivan hit a two-run homer. Kailey Hunt filed out to right field, bringing Mynard home to extend the lead to 12-2.
 
The Bulldogs responded with a three-run homer in the fifth inning to trim the Tigers' lead to 12-5. 
 
In the sixth inning, Cowart singled, scoring Taylor Clegg to end the game with a 13-5 win over the Bulldogs. 
 
Madison Wright (22-7) struck out six batters over five innings. 
 
Riley Vaughan (12-10) was tagged with the loss. She gave up seven earned runs on three hits and struck out one over 1.1 innings of work. Addison Abell pitched three innings, giving up five earned runs on eight hits.
 
The Tigers are back in action on Saturday as they close out the GSC series against Union with a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at UWA Softball Complex. Senior recognition will start at 12:30 p.m.
