Tiger Softball Sweeps DH Against Union to Clinch No. 3 Seed in the GSC Championship Tournament

LIVINGSTON, Ala. - West Alabama's softball team swept the Gulf South Conference doubleheader against Union Saturday afternoon at UWA Softball Complex. The Tigers shutout the Bulldogs in game one, 7-0, and won game two, 4-3.
 
The Tigers ended their regular season with a 38-11 overall record and went 23-7 to clinch the No. 3 seed in the GSC Championship Tournament. The Bulldogs dropped to 24-24 overall and are 13-15 in the conference. 
 
Game One
The Tigers shutout Union 7-0 in game one of the doubleheader. 
 
In the first inning, LP Trammell grounded out, scoring Kelsie Gilliam. Taylor Clegg and Ann Marie Stanbridge were left on base. In the top of the second inning, the Tigers' defense got three outs in a row. 
 
In the second inning, Hannah Mynard walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch, then moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from Madison Wright. Mynard scored when Kori Young reached first on a fielder's choice to take the 2-0 lead. Gilliam was the only batter left on base. 
 
Stanbridge started things in the third inning with a home run. Trammell reached on a fielder's choice to get on first. Emily Cowart then hit a two-run homer, bringing Trammell home to close the inning with a 5-0 lead. 
 
Neither team scored in the fourth or fifth inning. Lexy House singled up the middle in the sixth to start the inning. Kailey Hunt pinch ran for House. Gilliam reached first on a throwing error by Union's pitcher, advancing Hunt to second. Clegg's sacrifice bunt advanced Hunt and Gilliam up a base. Hunt and Gilliam scored when Stanbridge singled. 
 
In the top of the seventh inning, Young made back-to-back defensive outs. Clegg made the final out to close the game with a 7-0 win. 
 
Madison Wright (23-7) picked up the win. She gave up no earned runs on three hits and struck out seven over seven innings of work. 
 
Kira Finkley (2-6) was tagged with the loss. She gave up three hits, four earned runs, and walked two over two innings. Emily Claire Felder relieved Finkley and pitched four innings. Felder gave up an earned run on three hits and struck out seven. 
 
Game Two
A hit from Clegg late in the game allowed the Tigers to come away with the 4-3 win in the second game of the doubleheader. 
 
In the second inning, Riley Sullivan singled and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Mynard walked. Young was hit by a pitch. Bases were loaded when Gilliam was walked, scoring Sullivan to take the 1-0 lead. 
 
The Bulldogs pushed one run across the plate in the top of the third and fourth inning to take the 2-1 lead over UWA.
 
In the fifth inning, Trammell was walked. Cowart doubled, scoring Trammell to tie the game at 2-2. 
 
Union responded with a home run in the sixth inning to reclaim the lead, 3-2. Mynard and Gilliam both walked. Clegg's single scored Mynard and Gilliam, giving the Tigers the 4-3 lead. 
 
The Tigers' defense held the Bulldog's offense in the top of the seventh inning, allowing UWA to come away with the 4-3 win. 
 
Hannah Mynard (9-3) pitched six innings, giving up two hits on five earned runs, walking three, and striking out three. 
 
Riley Vaughn absorbed the loss. She gave up four earned runs, three hits, walked seven, and struck out nine over six innings.
 
The Tigers open the GSC Championship Tournament on Wednesday as they face the No. 6 seed Montevallo. The game is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. at Choccolocco Park in Oxford, Alabama.
