Tigers Defeat Montevallo 6-5 in GSC Championship Tournament

OXFORD, Ala. - West Alabama women's softball team defeated Montevallo 6-5 in the first game of the Gulf South Conference Championship Tournament at Choccolocco Park. 
 
The Tigers improved to 39-11 overall. The Falcons dropped to 19-23 overall. UWA is back in action Thursday at 3:30 p.m. at Choccolocco Park and will play the winner of game two (No. 2 Mississippi College vs. No. 7 Union).
 
Kelsie Gilliam led the Tigers from the plate. She went 3-for-3 with a double. Clegg tallied two hits. LP Trammell and Riley Sullivan each had a hit. 
 
Trammell started things off in the bottom of the first inning off a sacrifice bunt, scoring Gilliam. Emily Cowart reached on a dropped fly ball by the Falcons, bringing Taylor Clegg home to take the 2-0 lead. 
 
The Falcons hit two solo home runs in the top of the third inning to tie the game at 2-2. 
 
Clegg responded in the bottom of the third inning with a two-run homer, scoring Gilliam to take the 4-2 lead. Riley Sullivan also hit a two-run shot, pushing Trammell across the plate and ending the inning with a 6-2 lead. 
 
Montevallo hit a three-run homer with two outs left in the game to bring the score to 6-5. Wright then struck out Alisha Lanyon to close the game with a 6-5 win and advance in the GSC Championship Tournament. 
 
Wright (24-7) picked up the win. She pitched the complete game, giving up five earned runs and striking out 10. 
 
Taylor Lloyd (6-8) absorbed the loss. She gave up two earned runs on six hits and struck out two over three innings of work. Ariana Pinder replaced Lloyd for the next three innings. Pinder gave up a hit and struck out two batters.
