Tigers Split Doubleheader with Valdosta State

VALDOSTA, Ga. - West Alabama's softball team split the doubleheader with Valdosta State Friday afternoon at Steel's Diamond. The Tigers defeated the Blazers in game one 3-1 and lost 7-4 in game two.
 
The Tigers are 29-9 overall and 18-5 in GSC play. The Blazers are 31-6 overall and 17-3 in the conference. 
 
Game One
The Tigers trailed 1-0 heading into the top of the sixth inning then Taylor Clegg hit a three-run homer to come away with the 3-1 win over the Blazers. 
 
In the sixth inning, Madison Wright walked. Mary Grace Sheffield pinch ran for Wright. Kelsie Gilliam reached on a VSU error, advancing Sheffield to second. Karley McDaniel pinch ran for Gilliam. Taylor Clegg then hit a three-run shot to take the 3-1 lead. 
 
Neither team scored the remainder of the game, allowing the Tigers to claim the 3-1 win. 
 
Madison Wright (17-6) picked up the win in the circle. She gave up only one earned run on three hits and struck out nine over seven innings of work. 
 
Samantha Richards (22-3) took the loss. She gave up one hit, walked two, and struck out eight. 
 
Game Two
The Tigers dropped game two of the doubleheader 7-4.
 
Ann Marie Stanbridge and Emily Cowart each tallied two hits. 
 
Riley Sullivan singled, bringing Hunt home to take the 1-0 lead in the second inning of the game. The Blazers pushed two runs across the plate in the bottom of the second to take the lead 2-1
 
Stanbridge hit a home run in the third inning to tie the game at 2-2. 
 
The Blazers hit three home runs in the bottom of the third inning to take the 5-2 lead. 
 
In the fifth inning, Emily Cowart hit a home run. Stanbridge's sacrifice fly scores Sheffield to trim VSU's lead to 5-4.
 
The Blazers then hit two more home runs in the fifth inning to take the 7-4 lead. Neither team scored the remainder of the game, allowing the Blazers to come away with the 7-4 win. 
 
Hannah Mynard gave up five earned runs on five hits over 2.1 innings of work. Eleanor De Block pitched 2.2 innings, giving up two earned runs on two hits. Stanbridge struck out two over one inning of work.
 
Madison Lumpp (7-0) gave up three earned runs on five hits and struck out five over four innings. Samantha Richards earned her third save of the season. She struck out five over three innings. 
 
The Tigers close out the GSC series against Valdosta State on Saturday. First pitch is set for 11 a.m. at Steel's Diamond at Blazer Park
