Men's Soccer falls to Carson-Newman in Season Opener

VESTAVIA HILLS, Ala.- The University of West Alabama men's soccer team opened the 2023 season Thursday afternoon in a neutral-site contest from Sicard Hollow Athletic Complex versus Carson-Newman University, with the Eagles taking the 2-0 victory.

The Tigers were aggressive offensively, taking 17 shots overall with nine on target, while allowing the Eagles to 11 shots, six on goal.

UWA opened the game with a stone-wall defensive effort, allowing just three shots in the first half of the match.

Of the seven shots taken by the UWA offense in the first half, Barioni Kengeye took charge in the first 20 minutes of play, taking three shots.

Things turned sour 49 seconds into the second half as Carson-Newman's Thomas De Graaw netted the Eagles first goal, trouncing the Tigers shutout efforts.

UWA responded with three opportunities to equalize the match by David Nunez, Kengeye and Bailey Jefferies. After a wide attempt by Nunez, Kengeye's strike was deflected off the C-N keeper. Jefferies picked up the loose ball and attempted to score, but it was saved again.

Carson-Newman once again wasted no time responding, as Mitchell Honcoop scored just 44 seconds later in the 49th minute.

The Eagles start the season 1-0, while the Tigers fall to 0-1. West Alabama will travel back home Saturday to host North Georgia, who lost their season opener to the Flames of Lee University 1-3. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. at Tiger Stadium.
