Volleyball Stumbles in GSC Match with Warhawks

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama volleyball team dropped a three-set decision to Auburn University at Montgomery in a Gulf South Conference (GSC) contest, Tuesday evening from Pruitt Hall. 

AUM earned its first win in GSC play and moved to 11-4 on the year, 1-2 in league play. UWA fell to 3-11 and 1-3 in conference play. 

Set number one saw 15 kills on a .367 swing percentage for the visiting Warhawks, and they used five straight kills to start the match on an 8-1 run. 

Following a Chyna Dixon kill to make it a 21-15 set score, the Warhawks on the last four points thanks to back-to-back kills by Myllena Torquetti and Giulia Santauri. The set was clinched on a block by Torquetti and Alessia Cappai. 

West Alabama came out strong in the second set, winning six of the first nine points. However, the lead would not last long for the Tigers, as the Warhawks, trailing 7-4, won five straight points to flip the lead back to AUM, 9-7. 

The set went back-and-forth from there, but AUM, leading 20-17, won five of the final seven points to take set number two. 

The Tigers got the offense rolling in the third set, as Jaida Alvin and Amelia Johnigan had kills in the 5-0 run to start the frame. Following an AUM timeout, the Warhawks responded with five points of their own to tie the set at five points apiece. 

Trailing 11-10 after an AUM attack error, the Warhawks won 14 of the next 15 points to put the match away, 25-14. 

In the battle of the top-two teams in the GSC when it comes to service aces, AUM posted 10 aces to UWA's four. 

Chyna Dixon and Jaida Alvin each tallied seven kills to lead the UWA offense.

Berfin Mertcan added 14 assists and seven digs. 

Maya Thompson led the Warhawks with 10 digs, while Alessia Cappai had 12 digs and three aces. 

UWA continues GSC play on Friday night when the Tigers battle the Choctaws of Mississippi College. First serve in Clinton, Mississippi is set for 6 p.m.
