JACKSON, Tenn. – The University of West Alabama women's basketball team fell to nationally-ranked Union University, 94-50, in a Gulf South Conference contest Saturday afternoon from Fred DeLay Gymnasium.
The Lady Bulldogs improve to 14-1 and 8-1 in the GSC, while the Tigers drop to 3-10 and 2-7.
Union, winners of the last four GSC Tournament Championships, is ranked sixth in the latest
WBCA Coaches Poll and 16th in the
Division II College Sports Communicators (D2CSC) Media Poll.
The contest saw West Alabama down 9-0 quickly with Union's fast-paced offense.
Maryanne Logsdon got the scoring with a three-point play after drawing the foul on a layup.
UWA's 9-5 run after Logsdon's three-point play cut the deficit to five, 14-9, with 3:10 left in the opening quarter, but the Bulldogs maintained the defensive pressure in the backcourt, forcing turnovers and missed shots. On the offensive end, UU posted a quick 10-0 run to make it a 24-9 advantage with under 30 seconds remaining.
The Tigers responded with a
Shayla Golden layup with 12 seconds remaining. On the ensuing inbound,
Sydney Schwallie intercepted the pass from Emma Kallas and knocked down a jump shot at the end of the quarter to cut the deficit to 24-13.
Early in the second quarter,
Kendall Lacoste knocked down a triple to cut the Union lead to 26-16, but a 19-2 run in a nearly five-minute span by the Lady Bulldogs, knocking down all eight field goal attempts and forcing six turnovers.
UWA saw back-to-back buckets from
Jordan Parker and Logsdon that made it 45-23 with 2:32 left in the period, but UU took a 51-27 lead into the locker room.
Union used an 8-0 run in the first 2:30 of the third quarter to swell the lead to 32 points, 59-27, but West Alabama kept pace with Union for the period, converting 7-of-12 of its shots from the field.
The Lady Bulldogs, who lead Division II in scoring offense (96.9), assists per game (19.6), and 3-pointers per game (12.1), shot 59% from the floor, knocking down 39 of their 66 shots.
Julia Rodriguez led the Tigers with 11 points off the bench, while
Kendall Lacoste added 10 and grabbed four boards.
Macey Lee led Union with 18 points on 8-of-9 shooting in 17 minutes. Shanique Lucas contributed 15 points converting 7-of-10 from the floor.
UWA will next make the short trip to Memphis to take on Christian Brothers University on Monday evening from Canale Arena.
