LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The University of West Alabama Men's Basketball team completed the sweep of their homestand on Sunday, by defeating the Virginia Lynchburg Dragons, 93-55 in Pruitt Hall.
West Alabama (3-1) dominated in all phases of the game on Sunday as they held Virginia Lynchburg (0-4) to 33 percent shooting and 32 percent from three while out rebounding them by 17.
Much like their game against John Melvin on Thursday, it was all Jaylen Lemons in the first half for UWA. Off the bench, Lemons poured in 15 points on four made threes. Marcellious Lockett got things started for the Tigers, knocking down a three 19 seconds into the ball game before the Dragons' Terrance Johnson countered with back-to-back threes to give Virginia Lynchburg their only lead of the night at 7-6. Johnson continued to score at will, trading baskets with West Alabama until Lemons came into the game at the 11:22 mark and began his three-point barrage. The senior made three three-pointers in the next two minutes to propel UWA to a 24-14 lead. For the next five minutes, West Alabama maintained a healthy distance from Virginia Lynchburg but couldn't pull away because of the scoring prowess of Johnson. The junior Wing scored 21 points in the half for the Dragons, but at the 4:00 minute mark, UWA used a 10-3 run to take their largest lead of the game, at 44-27, into halftime.
West Alabama only shot 40 percent in the first half but held Virginia Lynchburg to 32 percent, while out rebounding the Dragons by 10.
To begin the second half, the Tigers were a little out of sync offensively, resulting in Virginia Lynchburg cutting West Alabama's lead down to 13. With 13:04 left to play, Lemons knocked down his sixth three of the game which jumpstarted the Tigers' offense. Lemons' three ignited a 16-6 UWA run to push West Alabama's lead out to 68-45 with 8:47 left on the clock. Back-to-back threes from Johnson halted the Tigers' momentum for a moment until Elliot Tulip buried his first career three-pointer that ignited the West Alabama crowd. After Tulip's trifecta, UWA ended the game on a 23-4 run, cruising to a 93-55 win.
Lemons led the way with a game-high 27 points on eight made threes while Tulip scored 11 points in his first career game. Caleb McGill and Rasean Frederick dominated the glass, combining for 25 rebounds.
West Alabama will be back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Americus, Georgia for a 5:00 p.m. matchup against Georgia Southwestern.
