TUSKEGEE, Ala. - The West Alabama women's basketball team fell to Tuskegee, 62-58, at the Daniel James Center on Monday evening in a tightly contested matchup.
The Tigers started strong, taking a 20-14 lead in the first quarter behind efficient shooting and solid ball movement.
Julia Rodriguez and
Callie Cowan were instrumental early, combining for 12 points in the opening period. However, Tuskegee responded in the second quarter, outscoring UWA 18-10 to secure a 32-30 halftime lead.
West Alabama continued to battle in the second half, led by Rodriguez, who finished with a team-high 14 points, and Cowan, who contributed 12 points and three assists. The Tigers made several defensive stops in the third quarter, but Tuskegee capitalized on second-chance opportunities and free throws to maintain their edge.
Kendall Lacoste added seven points, including one of UWA's two three-pointers, while
Jordan Parker led the Tigers on the boards with nine rebounds. Kaedra Denson also made her presence felt, pulling down nine rebounds.
Despite a late push in the fourth quarter, UWA couldn't overcome Tuskegee's balanced scoring and clutch free-throw shooting, which saw the home team convert 20-of-29 attempts from the line.
The Tigers will look to rebound when they return to Pruitt Hall for their first Gulf South Conference game on Thursday, December 5th, for a 5 p.m. tip-off against Valdosta State.
