LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The University of West Alabama Men's Basketball team remained perfect at home on Saturday, defeating the Webster Gorloks, 72-60, in Pruitt Hall.
UWA (4-2) didn't shoot the ball particularly well from the field, but the Tigers' season-low four turnovers and 16 more free throw attempts than Webster (1-5) was enough to propel West Alabama to their second home win of the year.
West Alabama started a bit slow to begin but still held a 13-11 lead at the first media timeout. Moments later, after a bucket from Rasean Frederick, Webster's Sebastian Reed and Jonah Hibbert buried back-to-back threes to give the Gorloks a 17-16 lead. For the next six minutes, both teams traded baskets, resulting in four ties and three lead changes during that stretch until Elliot Tulip and Jaylen Lemons carried a 6-0 UWA run to give the Tigers a 31-26 lead with 5:02 left in the half. At this point in the period, West Alabama had all the momentum and took it into halftime as Thaddeus Williams knocked down back-to-back threes to extend UWA's lead to 38-30, going into the break.
West Alabama shot 32.5 percent from the field and 26.7 percent from three in the first half but didn't turn the ball over at all, resulting in their eight-point lead at the break.
Williams three-point barrage continued to begin the second half as the senior buried his third three of the game, two minutes in, to give the Tigers their largest lead of the night at 41-30. With the game beginning to get away from Webster, their leading scorer and rebounder, Karl Moore Jr., stepped up and put an end to West Alabama's momentum, igniting a 12-0 Gorloks run, putting UWA in a 42-41 deficit with 15:06 left to play. A three-point play from Michael McIntosh and Williams' fourth three of the day gave the Tigers' the lead right back just before Tulip knocked down a three of his own, giving UWA a six-point lead. Once West Alabama regained the lead, they never looked back as McIntosh and Dadrevius Weathers dominated the second half to propel the Tigers to a 72-60 win.
Williams led the way with a team-high 18 points, nine-rebounds, and five assists while Weathers recorded the first double-double of his UWA career with 16 points and 10 rebounds in just 16 minutes.
West Alabama will be back in action on Thursday when they open up conference play against Valdosta State at 7:00 p.m. in Pruitt Hall.
