LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama women's basketball team was defeated by Lee University in a Gulf South Conference contest 69-50, Thursday evening inside Pruitt Hall.
Lee improved to 13-7 overall and 11-5 in the conference, while West Alabama fell to 5-15 and 4-12.
"Very disappointing night compared to the effort we gave the other night. Some of the things we focused on early in the game they broke our back with it, and we just didn't recover," said head coach
Rusty Cram.
Lee jumped to an early 4-0 lead after two free throws and a layup. However, UWA cut the early deficit down to one, 6-5, after a
Julia Rodriguez pull-up jumper and a triple by
Jordan Parker.
Rodriguez gave the Tigers their first lead of the day with 5:15 left in the opening stanza with another jumper.
West Alabama extended the opening quarter lead with back-to-back second chance opportunities. After
Shayla Golden went 1-of-2 from the charity stripe to make it a 10-8 lead,
Kamille Clark made it a four-point game with a jumper.
However, the visiting Lady Flames scored the final nine points of the period to flip the lead back in their favor, 17-12.
Lee kept the run going early in the second quarter, swelling the lead to double figures, 22-12. The Tigers ended the drought with a Clark layup that started a 9-2 run.
Kendall Lacoste trimmed the deficit back to one possession, 24-21, with a driving layup with 6:31 remaining.
However, the visitors ended the period on a 12-3 run and not allowing the home team to connect from the field in the final 3:42.
Lee increased the lead to 20 thanks to halting the Tiger offense, holding them to a seven-minute scoring drought.
For the fourth straight game and six of her last seven,
Kamille Clark scored in double figures with 13 points. Setting a new career high with 11 rebounds, the senior posted her first career double-double in a West Alabama uniform.
