CLEVELAND, Miss. - The University of West Alabama men's basketball team bounced back in a big way against Delta State University, defeating the Statesmen on the road 80-67 Saturday night.
West Alabama and Delta State exchanged blows for the first six and a half minutes, with Terry Durham scoring six of UWA's first eight points.
The Statesmen's Colby Horace scored a quick five points to give the home team the 13-8 advantage with 12:26 remaining in the first stanza.
The Tigers responded with a 9-0 scoring run capped off by a Tyler Talley layup, forcing a DSU timeout.
Though West Alabama didn't slow down its offensive production, Delta State found their groove again after the stoppage, taking a 23-22 lead with six and a half remaining in the first half.
West Alabama pulled away from the Statesmen late into the first stanza, finishing the final five minutes before the break on a 14-4 run, taking a 37-26 lead into the locker room.
Durham came out of the intermission the same way he left it, driving straight to the basket to stretch the Tiger lead to 13.
Kelen Dietrich pulled the Statesmen back within six with a huge triple with 12:48 remaining, giving life back to DSU.
However, the Tigers never relinquished a single-digit deficit again for the remainder of the contest, leading by as much as 16 points over Delta State.
"The guys played with a ton of energy coming off a hard loss to Mississippi College. We scored the basketball with quantity and quality tonight," said head coach Nick Woodruff postgame.
West Alabama had four players in double figures, most notably Terry Durham with 21 points and seven rebounds on 8-for-11 shooting. Scoring 20 or more for the second time this season, he matched his season-best on Saturday.
Jaylen Lemons dropped 16 points on 6-for-9 shooting, while CJ Melton recorded a double-double with 14 points and a team-high ten rebounds. Thaddeus Williams added 14 points. Kuran Garner provided six assists for the visitors.
The Tigers had 38 points in the paint, the most against an NCAA opponent this season, and added 15 bench points from Talley and Caleb McGill.
West Alabama moves to 15-8 overall and 12-7 in Gulf South Conference play. Delta State falls to 12-11 and 10-9.
UWA will host the top seed in the conference in West Georgia on Wednesday inside Pruitt Hall. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
