JACKSON, Tenn. – The University of West Alabama baseball team was unable to overcome a fast start by Union University, as the Bulldogs took the Gulf South Conference series opener with a 6-1 score, Sunday from Fesmire Field.
West Alabama falls to 6-5 and 1-2 in the GSC with the loss, while Union improves to 6-5 and 2-1.
The Union offense got to
Graham Holland early, as the Bulldogs scored two runs in the bottom of the first.
In the bottom of the second, after an RBI groundout by Carson Chavies, Mitch Sisk made it a 4-0 lead with a double down the left field line.
The Tigers had an opportunity to dent the scoreboard in the top of the fifth, by loaded the bases on walks by
Will Wood,
Kyle Vogler and
Houston Kitterman, but a strikeout ended the threat.
In the seventh, after Wood led off the frame with a base hit, he would later score on a wild pitch to make it a 4-1 deficit. However, the Bulldogs put the game away in the bottom half with a two-run double by Grant Ross.
Bryce Newman extends his hitting streak to 10 games with a 2-for-4 day at the plate with two stolen bases.
Houston Kitterman posted his fourth multi-hit game of the year and the second of the series with a 2-for-3 day at the dish with a double.
West Alabama will return home to start a four-game home stand, starting with a midweek bout with Tuskegee on Wednesday afternoon. First pitch from Tartt Field is scheduled for 3 p.m.
