LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama baseball team suffered a 4-2 loss to the No. 16 University of West Florida in Gulf South Conference action, Friday night from Tartt Field.
UWA falls to 7-6 and 1-3 in the league, while UWF improves to 8-2 and 1-0.
In the third, the Argos struck first with a base hit by Darrien McDowell to bring home Trent Jeffcoat for the 1-0 advantage.
After that,
Bryant Quimby settled down, retiring the next eight he faced and 11 of the final 12, culminating with a pair of strikeouts in the sixth to retire the side.
West Alabama tried to shift the momentum back to the bats, and despite a two-out base hit by
Bryce Newman, he would be left stranded on base.
Unfortunately for UWA, the Argos made it a 4-0 ballgame with three runs in the seventh.
West Alabama was able to avoid the shutout with two runs in the bottom of the ninth thanks to a
Cade Horton RBI groundout and a
Brayden Pelkey base knock.
The Argos are ranked 16th in the latest National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division II Poll.
Bryant Quimby (1-1), despite suffering the loss, allowed one unearned run in six innings with five strikeouts.
Jadon Fryman went 2-for-4 on the afternoon to lead the Argos.
West Alabama wraps up the series with West Florida on Saturday with a doubleheader, starting at 1 p.m. from Tartt Field.
