No. 6/14 Union Runs Past Women's Basketball

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama was defeated by No. 6/15 Union University in the final game of the 2023-24 home schedule, 84-62, Saturday afternoon inside Pruitt Hall. 

Union, ranked sixth in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association poll and 14th in the Division II College Sports Communicators Poll, improves to 26-2 and 20-2 in the Gulf South Conference. West Alabama falls to 6-20 and 5-17. 

The Tigers were down early, as the Lady Bulldogs made it a 9-0 lead before Julia Rodriguez opened the scoring with 8:10 left in the opening quarter. 

Union kept the foot on the gas pedal, scoring 30 points and swelling the lead to 30-14 at the end of the first quarter. On the offensive end, the Lady Bulldogs converted 13-of-22 from the floor in the first 10 minutes, and on defense, they forced 10 turnovers and scored 14 points off the miscues. 

The Tigers made it competitive in the second quarter, knocking down 7-of-14 from the field in the quarter, but it was the visitors with the 51-33 lead at the break. 

Despite the loss, the Tigers held the Lady Bulldogs to their fourth-lowest offensive production of the season with 84. Union's scoring average of 93.4 is the best in all of NCAA Division II. 

West Alabama was led in scoring by Kamille Clark with 14 points on 5-of-12 shooting and grabbed eight boards. Maryanne Logsdon added 11 points and three dimes, while Julia Rodriguez dropped 10 points. 

Olivia Lee knocked down 7-of-12 from the field for 16 points, while Macey Lee added 13 points and eight boards. 

The Tigers will wrap up the 2024 season on the road, starting with a second straight opponent ranked in the top 10 of Division II in No. 8/2 Valdosta State on Thursday. Tip is scheduled for 5 p.m. CST from Valdosta, Georgia.
