VALDOSTA, Ga. – The University of West Alabama women's basketball team fell 91-45 in a Gulf South Conference contest to No. 6/2 Valdosta State University, Thursday evening.
Valdosta State, ranked sixth in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association poll and second in the Division II College Sports Communicators national polls, improves to 25-2 and 22-1 in the league with the win, while West Alabama drops to 6-21 and 5-18.
The Tigers kept pace with the Lady Blazers in the first 10 minutes of play, even breaking ahead early in the period.
Julia Rodriguez made it a 6-5 lead midway through with a jump shot.
VSU reclaimed the lead following the media timeout and maintained it for the remaining of the quarter, but UWA stayed on their heels.
Shayla Golden's jump shot with 19 second left in the period cut the deficit to 18-16.
Despite a
Maryanne Logsdon layup to start the second quarter, VSU went on a six-minute run of dominance, going 21-3 in the stretch and holding UWA to 1-of-7 from the field. The Lady Blazers used the run to take a 47-23 lead at the break.
The Lady Blazers, who shot 57.1% from the floor, 36-of-63, added a 26-9 third quarter thanks to a 10-of-14 mark from the field.
Shayla Golden went 9-of-10 from the charity stripe and added 5-of-7 from the field for a game-high 19 points and added seven rebounds.
Emma Martin led VSU with 16 points on four triples, while Aleisha Curry added 14 points in 18 minutes.
The regular season concludes on Saturday for West Alabama at Valdosta State.
