LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama baseball team was taken down by Columbus State University 17-4, Tuesday afternoon from Tartt Field.
Columbus State improves to 17-11 with the win, while West Alabama falls to 13-14.
It was all zeros in the first couple of innings, but the Cougars got the bats going in the third with five runs, capped by a grand slam by Colby Brabston.
The Tigers threatened in the bottom half, putting runners on the corners with two outs after knocks by
Will Wood and
Jack Beck, but a groundout ended the opportunity.
CSU made it a 6-0 lead with a RBI single by Brabston in the top of the fifth.
However, the Tigers were finally starting to get to starter Ryan Suppa, who retired 12 of the first 15 batters he faced going into the bottom of the sixth. After a
Houston Kitterman lead off free pass and a
Cade Horton double, UWA got on the board with a balk.
Sam Smith, who pinch ran for Kitterman, scored on the play.
Following a pitching change, and three batters later, Wood laced a double to right center for two RBIs to cut the deficit in half, 6-3.
After keeping the Cougars off the scoreboard in the seventh, they would answer in the eighth with three runs and added eight in the ninth to put the contest away.
Will Wood reached on all four plate appearances on the afternoon with two hits, including a double, and added a pair of walks and RBIs each.
Jack Beck adds his fourth multi-hit game in the last seven games with a pair of knocks on Tuesday.
Colby Brabston led CSU with seven RBIs on a 3-for-6 day at the dish, while Luke Hasty added five RBIs. Each launched a home run in the win.
UWA will next step back into conference play this weekend against West Georgia. Weather permitting, the Tigers and Wolves will play a single game to open the series Friday evening at 5 p.m.
