MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of West Alabama baseball team scored four runs in the last three innings, but fall short to the University of Montevallo, 13-8, Tuesday from Kermit A. Johnson Field at Bob Riesener Stadium.
UWA drops to 18-22 on the year, while UM improves to 24-18 and sweep the season series.
The bats were alive in the first frame on both sides. The Tigers scored the first run of the game two batters in after
Bryce Newman started with a leadoff double, followed by a
Blake Vineyard knock up the middle.
Two batters later,
Ryan Fletcher added a second run with a sacrifice fly.
Things shifted in the bottom of the first. Despite the Tigers getting two quick outs, the Falcons cashed in on a free pass and a two-run home run by Logan Harbin. Unfortunately, the Falcons would not stop there, as two walks, a wild pitch and a balk gave the home team the 3-2 lead.
Landon Leake made it a 4-2 score with a base knock, followed by a Christian Kallaher two-run home run to stretch the lead to 6-2.
UM added two runs in the third and fourth, followed by three in the fifth to swell the lead to 13-4. In the top of the fourth, after
Albert Hernandez laced a one-out base hit,
Will Wood launched an opposite-field home run.
The Tigers made it interesting in the late innings, as
Brayden Pelkey's RBI double in the seventh made it a 13-5 score.
In the ninth, the Tigers made it interesting. After a
Sam Smith single and back-to-back walks by
Nick Thibodeau and
Jacob Messina, Pelkey inched the Tigers closer with a sac fly.
On
Michael Allen Cole's walk, the pitch got away from the catcher, and Thibodeau scored on the play via passed ball.
Wood went the other way again for an RBI double to score Messina to make it a 13-8 game to flip the lineup, but the Falcons secured the victory in the midweek contest.
Will Wood went 2-for-5 on the night with three RBI and his first home run of the season.
Houston Kitterman,
Blake Vineyard and
Albert Hernandez all had multi-hit games with two each.
After the Falcons broke the game open in the middle innings, the final three pitchers out of the bullpen for the Tigers,
Luke Fondren,
Judah Buckner and
Jace Dunsford all recorded a shutout inning.
The Tigers will next step back into conference action this weekend with a three-game series against Alabama Huntsville. It all starts with a doubleheader on Friday at 1 p.m. from Tartt Field.
