ROME, Ga. - The University of West Alabama softball team defeated Shorter University 9-0 to complete the series sweep on Sunday afternoon at the Alto Park Softball Complex.
With Taylor Clegg and Kelsie Gilliam in scoring position in the top of the first, Marissa Mitchell got the Tigers on the board with an RBI single.
Riley Sullivan tacked on a third run with an RBI single into the third base gap.
Gilliam cashed in a one-out walk by Sara Fargo as she lased an RBI knock to right field.
History repeated in Mitchell's second at-bat, as she recorded a second RBI with Clegg and Gilliam in scoring position to increase the lead to 5-0 with a sacrifice groundout to close out the second inning.
Gilliams RBI fielder's choice with the bases juiced sent Gaddy Utsey home to score run number six.
The Shorter defense gave up yet another run as Mary Grace Sheffield advanced on a hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded, sending Ann Marie Stanbridge home from third in the top of the fourth.
A sacrifice groundout from Stanbridge made it an 8-0 contest in the top of the fifth.
Riley Sullivan put the cherry on top with an RBI single to make it 9-0 and clinch the game three victory.
Marissa Mitchell and Riley Sullivan both accounted for two hits.

West Alabama finishes the regular season 33-16 overall and 16-14 in Gulf South Conference play. Shorter finishes 2-45 and 1-29.
With the GSC Championships starting up in the coming days, The Tigers earned the number seven seed in the tournament. They will face the number two seed Auburn Montgomery in the opening round at Chocolocco Park in Oxford, Ala. The First pitch is set for 12:30 p.m.
