CLINTON, Miss. - The University of West Alabama Softball team fell to Mississippi College 6-1 in the opening round of the NCAA South Regional at the MC Softball Complex on Thursday night.
MC advances to 46-7, while UWA falls to 34-19.
The Choctaws jumped out to an early lead with a two-run homer from McCall Lee after Emily Rigney worked her way to second off a fielding error and stolen base.
With Taylor Clegg in scoring position after a single and a walk, Ann Marie Stanbridge cut the MC lead to one with an RBI single to right center in the top of the fourth.
The home team brought the lead back up to two in the bottom of the inning with a Jordan Moore RBI double to left center.
Mississippi College kept the wheels rolling into the fifth inning, stretching the lead to 5-1 with a bases loaded walk and a fielder's choice.
The Choctaws tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth with a Kamryn Eaton RBI single and closed out the UWA offense in the seventh to clinch the win.
Ann Marie Stanbridge led the way with an RBI for the Tigers. Riley Sullivan reached twice on an base hit and a walk.
Mississippi College will advance to face Tampa in the winner's bracket game on Friday at noon, while West Alabama will face another familiar foe in Alabama Huntsville in an elimination game Friday afternoon at 2:30.
