Men's Soccer Takes Unbeaten Record to Tennessee for Matchup with Eagles

LIVINGSTON, Ala. - Off the heels of a win over Palm Beach Atlantic on Saturday, the University of West Alabama Men's Soccer team is set to travel to Jefferson City, Tennessee on Monday for a 4:00 p.m. CT matchup against the Carson Newman Eagles.

West Alabama (2-0-1) takes their unbeaten record on the road, with wins over Eckerd and Palm Beach Atlantic to begin the year. As for Carson Newman (0-2-2), they've struggled to begin the season, falling to Young Harris and Montevallo while tying with Trevecca and Catawba.

"We are all looking forward to our final regional game against a strong Carson Newman side," said head coach Ross Nelson. "We are off to a great start and plan to finish strong before going into conference play."

UWA's David Nunez continued his hot start to the 2024 campaign as the sophomore buried his third goal in the 79th minute to propel the Tigers past the Sailfish on Saturday. Nunez is the leader for West Alabama on the offensive end and the Forward's three goals currently ranks second in the GSC.

Alongside Nunez, Oneal David and Ronny Wakelin are also important pieces to UWA's success as the two have both played a team-high 270 minutes this season. Wakelin, a freshman from Walsall, has yet to put a ball into the back of the net but has put two on-goal through his first three collegiate games. As for David, he's been a staple in West Alabama's lineup and will play a big role in the Tiger's road contest against the Eagles.

In goal for UWA, Dressel Timon has been lights out. The Goalkeeper has been a big reason as to why the Tigers take an unbeaten record into Jefferson City as he's only allowed one goal, while making 17 saves this season. Timon's 17 saves currently leads the conference and ranks 30th in the country all while his .944 save percentage sits him 17th in the nation.

Carson Newman hasn't had any real trouble scoring the ball to begin the year as the Eagles have scored five goals in their four contests. The problem lies on the defensive side. Carson Newman has struggled to apply defensive resistance, allowing eight goals thus far, leading to their 0-2-2 record.

Mitchell Honcoop is by far the Eagles' best player this season. Honcoop, a senior Midfielder, leads Carson Newman with four goals which currently ranks seventh in the country. Honcoop began his senior campaign by scoring two goals against Trevecca Nazarene before adding two more in Carson Newman's matchups against Montevallo and Catawba.

Next to Honcoop, Issac Pascal has been the only other goal scorer for the Eagles so far this season as the junior Defender put the ball in the back of the net in Carson Newman's 4-2 loss to Montevallo.

Monday's contest between West Alabama and Carson Newman is set for 4:00 p.m. CT in Jefferson City, Tennessee.
