Volleyball Set to Open GSC Play Against Falcons

LIVINGSTON, Ala. - Reeling off their first win of the season, the University of West Alabama Volleyball is set to travel to Montevallo, Alabama for their GSC opener against the Montevallo Falcons on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m.

UWA (1-8, 0-0 GSC) enters Tuesday's contest after defeating Stillman in four sets last Thursday. For Montevallo (3-7, 0-0 GSC), they come into GSC play after knocking off No. 22 Augusta on Friday before falling to USC Aiken in four sets on Saturday.

After struggling on the offensive side to begin the year, West Alabama seemed to have turned a corner in their 3-1 win over Stillman as the Tigers accumulated a season-high 40 kills. Leading the offensive charge in their win and all season long is Outside Hitter Jaida Alvin. Alvin added 12 kills to her season total on Thursday and now comes into Tuesday's matchup against the Falcons with a team-high 62 kills on the year. Standing at 5'7", Alvin is on the smaller side for a Pin Hitter, but she makes up for it with elite level explosiveness and athleticism. The sophomore is by far the best athlete on the Tigers' roster and West Alabama will need her to be at her best if they want to leave Montevallo with a win on Tuesday.

Alongside Alvin is KB Kinney and Peyton Quesnel. Kinney comes into conference play after putting together the best performance of her young career against the Tigers of Stillman last week, recording a season and career-high seven kills. Much like a plethora of players on this young UWA roster, Kinney has the potential to be a productive Pin Hitter for West Alabama for years to come, but needs the reps and experience which she will continue to get on Tuesday night. As for Quesnel, she's a sophomore Outside Hitter for the Tigers, making her one of the oldest players on the roster. Quesnel currently ranks third on the team in kills with 32 and has put together a handful of solid performances, recording hitting percentages over .200 in two contests thus far.

Led by freshman Maggie Roddam, UWA has been solid defensively as they currently rank fourth in the GSC in opposing hitting percentage, holding teams to a .191 percentage. With that being said, the Tigers' are gearing up to face their toughest offensive test on Tuesday.

Montevallo has been through the gauntlet in their first 10 matches of the season, resulting in their 3-7 record. The Falcons' record is deceiving on paper as they are loaded with talent which is how they were able to defeat a nationally ranked team last weekend. Leading the way for Montevallo is Nikol Antova. Antova, a true freshman from Bulgaria, currently leads the Falcons and ranks second in the GSC in kills with 124. The freshman has put the country on notice through her first 10 matches, recording 20 plus kills in two of those contests, with a career-high 21 kills coming in back-to-back matches against Francis Marion and Ladner.

While Antova carries Montevallo offensively, fellow true freshman Ava Wind anchors the defense. Wind leads the team and ranks fifth in the conference with 145 digs, with 50 of them coming in back-to-back matches against Lander and 22nd-ranked Augusta.

With Antova and Wind at the top of the Falcons' roster and Alvin and Roddam leading the Tigers, we are set for a battle between two of the youngest teams in the GSC on Tuesday night.

First serve for Tuesday's matchup between West Alabama and Montevallo is set for 6:00 p.m. in Montevallo, Alabama.
