LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama women's soccer team kicked off the 2024 season with a 1-0 victory over Tusculum on Sunday at UWA Soccer Stadium.
A first-half goal by Selis Demirici secured the win for the Tigers in a match where they dominated possession and offensive chances.
West Alabama's breakthrough came in the 36th minute when Demirici found the net for her first goal of the season. The Tigers continued to pressure the Tusculum defense, tallying 19 shots with 10 on target. However, Tusculum's goalkeeper made nine saves to keep the match within reach.
Tusculum managed five shots throughout the game, three of which were on target, but UWA's defense, which was strong and anchored by reliable goalkeeping, held strong to record the clean sheet. West Alabama also limited Tusculum to just one corner kick and committed only four fouls.
With this win, West Alabama (1-0) starts the season on a positive note, while Tusculum falls to 0-2.
The Tigers will return to action on Friday, September 13th, when they face Clayton State on the road in Morrow, Georgia. Kickoff is set for 5:00 p.m.
