HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – West Alabama struggled to maintain momentum on the road, falling 80-55 to Alabama Huntsville in Gulf South Conference play on Saturday afternoon at Spragins Hall.
The Tigers drop to 2-13 overall and 2-9 in the GSC, while the Chargers improve to 14-3 overall and 9-2 in league play.
Shayla Golden led West Alabama with a standout performance, posting 17 points and grabbing eight rebounds.
Kendall Lacoste added nine points, while
Sydney Schwallie contributed seven points off the bench. Despite solid efforts from the starting lineup, West Alabama shot 36.2% from the field and struggled to find offensive consistency, particularly in the third quarter, where they managed just four points.
Alabama Huntsville's balanced attack was led by Lili Wilken, who tallied 17 points, six rebounds, and three steals. Bella White added 14 points and three rebounds, while Millie Brown knocked down four three-pointers on her way to 12 points. The Chargers shot an efficient 53.7% from the field and 50% from beyond the arc.
The two teams were tied 18-18 at the end of the first quarter, but UAH began pulling away in the second, outscoring UWA 23-17 for a 41-35 halftime lead. The Tigers' offense faltered in the third quarter, shooting just 5.88% (1-of-17) from the field, while the Chargers extended their lead with a 12-4 scoring advantage. UAH sealed the win with a dominant fourth quarter, outscoring UWA 27-16.
The Chargers capitalized on turnovers, scoring 20 points off UWA's 14 giveaways, while their bench contributed 27 points to the win. West Alabama recorded 15 second-chance points and held a slight edge in fast-break points but couldn't overcome UAH's efficient shooting and rebounding dominance.
West Alabama returns to action on Thursday, January 23, for another road matchup against West Florida. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. at UWF Field House.
