PENSACOLA, Fla. – The West Alabama women's basketball team fought hard but ultimately fell to West Florida, 68-58, in Gulf South Conference action on Monday evening at the UWF Field House.
The Tigers dropped to 2-15 overall and 2-11 in conference play, while the Argonauts improved to 14-5 and 10-3 in GSC competition.
The first quarter ended in a 12-12 tie, but West Florida found their offensive rhythm in the second quarter, outscoring West Alabama 20-15 to take a 32-27 lead into halftime. Delaney Trushel led the charge for the Argonauts with a game-high 21 points, shooting 81.8% from the floor.
West Alabama stayed within striking distance throughout the second half, with Kendall Lacoste and Jada Colley each scoring 13 points to lead the Tigers. Lacoste added six rebounds and four assists, while Kaedre Denson chipped in 11 points and six boards. Callie Cowan provided a spark off the bench with 12 points and six rebounds, going 4-for-4 from the free-throw line.
Despite their efforts, the Tigers struggled with efficiency, shooting just 32.8% from the field and 15.0% from beyond the arc. West Florida capitalized on West Alabama's 18 turnovers, scoring 23 points off miscues and maintaining a steady offense throughout the game.
The Argonauts were bolstered by Rylie Stephens, who scored 14 points, including three three-pointers, and Kamille Clark, who added eight points and four rebounds. West Florida shot 40.0% from the field and 76.9% from the free-throw line while holding a 23-15 edge in points off turnovers.
West Alabama will look to rebound in their next game, a home matchup against Trevecca Nazarene on Thursday, January 30, at 5 p.m. in Pruitt Hall.
