LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The University of West Alabama Men's Basketball had their three-game home winning streak snapped on Thursday night, falling 82-77 to the Auburn Montgomery Warhawks.
West Alabama (9-6, 5-4 GSC) struggled to contain AUM's (7-6, 4-5 GSC) balanced offensive as five Warhawks finished in double figures while shooting 55 percent from the floor and 57 percent from three.
Filling in for Thaddeus Williams who was ruled "out" tonight, Travion McCray was the story of an offensive heavy first half. McCray poured in 15 points in the period, getting UWA going with his first points at the 16:07 mark of the half. AUM's Chappelle Whitney jump started the Warhawks as a layup from the Forward gave Auburn Montgomery a 12-7 lead early. Both teams struggled to get stops on the defensive end as West Alabama's Charles Fofanah and AUM's Malachi Rhodes traded layups before McCray buried a three to make it a 26-26 game with 8:23 left in the half. The back-and-forth trend stayed true throughout the remainder of the period, with McCray hitting his third three at the end of the half to send the Tigers to the break, up by one.
West Alabama shot 46.2 percent from the floor in the first half while AUM shot 58.1 percent and 50 percent from three.
While McCray carried the offensive load in the first half, Rasean Frederick did the same in the second. The Junior Forward scored in back-to-back possessions early in the half to help the Tigers maintain their one-point lead until the Warhawks used a quick 6-0 run to pull ahead by five with 14:19 left to play. A bucket from McCray and a three-point play from Frederick ended Auburn Montgomery's run, tying the game up at 57. From there on out, the seesaw battle continued as the game saw four ties and three lead changes. AUM held a 76-75 lead with 2:05 to play and went on a 6-2 run to close out the game, securing an 82-77 win.
Frederick finished with a game-high 22 points and nine rebounds while McCray finished with 19 points, six rebounds, and five assists. Michael McIntosh also added 11 points off the bench.
West Alabama will be back in action on Saturday when they welcome the Montevallo Falcons to Pruitt Hall for a 4:00 p.m. GSC matchup.
