MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A pair of late goals from Selis Demirci propelled West Alabama to a thrilling 2-1 comeback victory over Christian Brothers on the road Friday evening at Signaigo Field.
After a scoreless first half, Christian Brothers struck first in the 72nd minute when Madison Woolridge found the back of the net off an assist from Ana Dutra. The Tigers, however, responded with determination and composure, dominating possession and creating several scoring chances late in the second half.
Demirci, who has been a consistent offensive force all season, equalized the match in the 82nd minute before netting the go-ahead goal just moments later to complete the comeback. The brace pushed her season total to seven goals, including another game-winner for the standout forward.
West Alabama (6-2-2, 3-2-1 GSC) controlled the pace throughout, outshooting Christian Brothers (1-7-1, 0-5-0 GSC) 20-4, including an 11-2 advantage in shots on goal. The Tigers' aggressive attack pressured the Buccaneers' defense all night, forcing CBU goalkeeper Kaylee Allen to make nine saves.
In the goal for UWA, Yumari Hernandez continued her consistent play, facing four total shots and recording one save while improving her record between the posts.
The victory gives the Tigers three crucial points in Gulf South Conference play as they continue to climb the league standings.
West Alabama returns to action on Sunday, traveling to Jackson, Tennessee, to take on Union University at 3:30 p.m.
