JACKSON, Tenn. – University of West Alabama Tigers women's soccer earned a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Union University Bulldogs women's soccer on Sunday afternoon at Smith Memorial Soccer Complex in Gulf South Conference play.
The lone goal of the match came in the 23rd minute when Selis Demirci found the back of the net for her eighth goal of the season. The play was set up beautifully, with Bailee Fairley and Aileen Charles combining for the assist to give the Tigers the early lead.
West Alabama (7-2-2, 4-2-1 GSC) came out aggressive in the first half, recording nine shots, three of which were on goal. Union (3-3-3, 2-3-1 GSC) applied pressure late, outshooting the Tigers 10-1 in the second half, but the defense held firm.
Goalkeeper Yumari Hernandez continued her outstanding freshman season, making four saves to earn her seventh shutout of the year. Union finished with 14 shots and four on target, while UWA totaled 10 shots and three on frame.
The Tigers will return home for their next match on Friday, October 17, when they host Delta State Lady Statesmen at 5 p.m. at Tiger Stadium.
