LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama women's soccer team continued its winning ways Friday afternoon, defeating Delta State 1-0 at the UWA Soccer Field.
The win marked the Tigers' fifth straight victory, improving their record to 8-2-2 overall and 5-2-1 in Gulf South Conference play.
The game's lone goal came early, as Selis Demirci netted her ninth goal of the season on a penalty kick in the eighth minute. The goal proved to be the difference-maker in a tightly contested defensive battle.
Despite being outshot 14-7, UWA made the most of its opportunities, with four shots on target. Delta State pressed hard throughout, but goalkeeper Yumari Hernandez anchored the Tigers' defense once again, recording eight saves to earn her eighth shutout of the season.
The Tigers displayed resilience defensively, withstanding seven Delta State corner kicks and maintaining composure through a physical match that featured several yellow cards.
West Alabama will look to keep its momentum going when it returns to action Sunday, October 19th anr home against Mississippi College. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. from UWA Soccer Field.
