HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The University of West Alabama women's soccer team extended its winning streak to seven with a 2–0 shutout victory over Alabama Huntsville, officially clinching a spot in the GSC Tournament on Thursday evening at Charger Park.
After a scoreless first half, the Tigers (10-2-2, 7-2-1 GSC) came alive late in the match with a pair of goals to secure their 10th win of the season.
Freshman Jade Arruda broke the deadlock in the 79th minute, finding the back of the net for her first goal of the season to put West Alabama ahead 1–0. Just five minutes later, Selis Demirci continued her strong run of form, scoring her 11th goal of the year off an assist from Summer Fox in the 84th minute to seal the win.
Defensively, the Tigers were once again dominant. Yumari Hernandez, the reigning GSC Goalkeeper and Freshman of the Week, recorded four saves and earned her tenth shutout of the season. UWA limited the Chargers to just four shots on target despite UAH's late push, as the hosts outshot the Tigers 13–6 overall.
The victory keeps West Alabama near the top of the Gulf South Conference standings as the Tigers continue their impressive midseason surge.
West Alabama will return home next week for its final regular season stretch, looking to keep its momentum rolling heading into postseason play.
