LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Behind two goals from senior forward Selis Demirci, the University of West Alabama women's soccer team earned a 3-1 Gulf South Conference victory over Valdosta State Friday evening at the UWA Soccer Field.
The Tigers (4-2-2, 1-2-1 GSC) wasted little time getting on the board, as Demirci converted a penalty kick in the ninth minute to give UWA an early 1-0 advantage. That lead carried into halftime before West Alabama's attack struck twice in a quick span late in the second half.
In the 75th minute, Aynzlie Nelson doubled the Tigers' advantage with her first collegiate goal, finishing off an assist from Demirci. Less than a minute later, Demirci stepped up to bury her second penalty kick of the match, pushing the score to 3-0.
Valdosta State (1-4-4, 0-3-1 GSC) responded in the 81st minute with a goal from Taylor Youmans, but UWA's defense held strong to secure the win.
The Tigers finished with eight total shots, six on target, compared to nine shots for the Blazer.
Yumari Hernandez picked up the win in goal, recording two saves, while Valdosta State goalkeeper Adrienne Cardona-Colon registered three saves.
UWA committed 13 fouls in the contest while Valdosta State tallied seven, with both sides picking up a yellow card.
West Alabama returns to action on Sunday, October 5, traveling to take on Auburn-Montgomery in another GSC matchup. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
