MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The University of West Alabama women's soccer team earned a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Auburn Montgomery on the road Sunday afternoon at the AUM Soccer Complex.
The Tigers controlled possession throughout the match and found the breakthrough early in the second half to secure their second straight Gulf South Conference win.
After a scoreless first half where UWA outshot the Warhawks 10-3, senior forward Selis Demirci delivered the game's lone goal in the 54th minute — her fifth of the season — giving the Tigers the 1-0 advantage they would not relinquish. The score also capped off a strong week for Demirci, who totaled three goals across two matches.
UWA's defense, led by goalkeeper Yumari Hernandez, held AUM to just four total shots and one on target. Hernandez recorded her sixth shutout of the season, continuing her standout form in goal.
The Tigers tallied 17 total shots, including seven on goal, while limiting the Warhawks to only one corner kick opportunity.
With the win, West Alabama improves to 5-2-2 overall and 2-2-1 in GSC play, while Auburn Montgomery drops to 1-5-2 overall and 0-3-2 in the conference.
The Tigers return to action on Friday , October 10th, when they travel to Memphis, Tennessee, to face Christian Brothers University. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
