LIVINGSTON, Ala. — The University of West Alabama Men's Basketball team secured a decisive victory over Oakwood University, 106-57, on Sunday at Pruitt Hall.
Similar to their last contest against Huntingdon, West Alabama (4-1, 0-0 GSC) thoroughly dominated every facet of the game. The Tigers shot 56 percent from the floor and 50 percent from three while holding Oakwood (2-7, 1-1 HBCU) to 33 percent from the field and 27 percent from three. UWA also outrebounded the Ambassadors, 47-27, in route to their fourth win of the season.
"I'm proud of the mental intensity and competitive stamina," said head coach
Nick Woodruff. "Oakwood is averaging 79 points per game and they spread you out and put you in different positions than you're accustomed to, so I wanted the guys to feel that challenge and I think they did a great job."
UWA opened the game with a dominant offensive display, building a 29-14 lead midway through the first half.
Elliot Tulip led the charge with key baskets, including a three-pointer at the 9:10 mark.
Caleb Parr contributed significantly with multiple threes, helping extend the lead.
Jakobe Singleton and
Inslee Carroll capitalized on the Ambassadors' turnovers, converting fast-break opportunities into points. West Alabama concluded the half with a commanding 52-17 advantage, highlighted by
Travion McCray's three-point play in the final seconds.
UWA held Oakwood to 17 points on 24 percent shooting and 10 percent from three in the first half.
In the second half, West Alabama continued to pile it on with tenacious defense and made baskets. Parr opened the scoring with a tip-in at 19:43, followed by a timeout from the Ambassadors. The Tigers maintained control through a series of strategic plays, including a dunk from
Christian Thompson at 17:49 and a layup by
Rasean Frederick at 17:28. Despite efforts from Oakwood's Joshua Barnett and Fredrick Parker, West Alabama's consistent scoring and defensive stops secured their advantage, culminating in a 106-57 victory.
"We're continuing to trend in the right direction," coach Woodruff continued. "I'm hoping by February and March that this is a significantly improved group in all aspects."
Parr led the scoring for UWA with 17 points, including three three-pointers, and added two steals. Carroll contributed 16 points, converting six of eight field goals, and also recorded two steals. Thompson posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
BJ Brown Jr. facilitated the offense with six assists and secured two steals.
Defensively, West Alabama held Oakwood's Jordan Bell, who entered the game averaging 25.5 points per game, to five points on 14 percent shooting.
The Tigers will begin conference play on Thursday, traveling to Valdosta, GA for a 7:00 p.m. CST matchup.
