Men’s Soccer Battles to the End, Falls 1-0 in OT to Argonauts in GSC Quarterfinals

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The seventh-seeded University of West Alabama men's soccer team saw its season come to a hard-fought close on Sunday afternoon, falling 1-0 in overtime to second-seeded West Florida in the opening round of the Gulf South Conference Tournament at the UWF Soccer Complex.

The Tigers (5-8-2, 5-5-1 GSC) pushed the Argonauts (11-1-5, 7-0-4 GSC) to the limit behind an outstanding effort from goalkeeper Charlie Walker, who totaled eight saves, including a massive penalty-kick stop in the 89th minute to send the match into overtime.

Both sides created chances throughout regulation, with UWF holding a 17-6 shot advantage and 9-4 edge in shots on goal. Despite the pressure, Walker stood tall, keeping the Argonauts off the board for over 94 minutes of play.

West Florida finally broke through in the 95th minute when Jonas Grauer scored the golden goal, assisted by Rafael Esteves, to lift the Argonauts to the 1-0 win.

For West Alabama, David Nunez, Ronny Wakelin, and Jamie Tomlinson each put shots on frame, while the back line anchored by Abdul Kamara and Oisin Griffin limited UWF's high-powered attack for much of the contest.

The loss marks the end of a gritty season for the Tigers, who battled through a competitive GSC slate to earn the seventh seed and take one of the league's top teams to overtime in the postseason.
