Tennis Competes with Division I Hornets in Season Opening Loss

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The University of West Alabama Men's and Women's Tennis teams pushed Division I, Alabama State, to the brink on Saturday but ultimately fell in both matches.

The West Alabama Women's team (0-1) were a match away from victory, falling 4-3 to the Alabama State (2-5). For the UWA Men (0-1), they dropped a 5-2 decision to the Hornets (3-4).

WOMEN'S RESULTS
The Tigers lost the Doubles' point to kick off the match before Shaira Rivera and Valentina Mutilba swept their opponents in Lines One and Two. Rivera defeated ASU's Diana Cracium, (6-3, 6-2) while Mutilba defeated Melisa Mekic, (6-0, 6-2). 

In her first match in a West Alabama uniform, Alexa Milliam took care of business in Line Three, taking down Carmella Vial in straight sets, (7-6, 6-1). 

The rest of the singles matches were competitive as Emiri Takanishi fell (5-7, 4-6) to Cleanne Pickel while Greta Zawels dropped a three-set decision, (3-6, 6-4, 4-6). Lolita Huskasian fell in straights sets, (2-6, 2-6) to Ena Arnautovic.

MEN'S RESULTS
Federico Iturbe and Jacob Tapia won their Doubles match but Alabama State took home the Doubles' point after winning the other two matches.

In Singles play, Iturbe and Vilislav Bonev handled their oppositions, winning in straights sets. Iturbe defeated Gordan Fran Milesusni, (6-3, 6-4) while Bonev defeated Lataste Matteo, (6-3, 7-6). 

The duo of Iturbe and Bonev picked up the lone two wins for UWA as fell, 2-5.

West Alabama' Women's Tennis will be back in action on Wednesday when they open up conference play against AUM while the Men are set to travel to Spring Hill on Tuesday for a contest against the Badgers.
