Men’s Tennis Sweeps Badgers to Secure First Win

LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The University of West Alabama Men's Tennis Team secured their first win of the 2025 season on Tuesday, sweeping Spring Hill, 7-0.

"It is nice to get the first win of the season," said head coach Jeff Beaman. "Spring Hill is a talented team and we were pushed in many matches but came out with the wins."

West Alabama (1-1) won the doubles point to kick off the day with duos of Francisco Oliveria/Afonso Portugal, Iturbe/Tapia, and Tomas Almeida/Eita Ishikawa all winning their respective doubles match.

In Line One singles, Oliveira defeated Spring Hill's Tom Gutermann in straight sets (6-4,6-2) while Almeida and Tapia did the same in Lines Two and Three. Almeida secured his first individual win of the season against the Badgers after he breezed through Noe Hauschildt, (6-2,6-1). Tapia was involved in a competitive set one but prevailed with a 7-6 decision, before winning the second set 6-0 to clinch another point for the Tigers. 

In Line Five, Federico Iturbe moved to 2-0 in singles play on the year, defeating Spring Hill's Luke Tucker, (6-2,6-0) while Vilislav Bonev also reminded perfect on the season, after taking a (4-6, 6-0, 7-5) decision against the Badgers' Hugo Blasco Granell.

West Alabama Men's Tennis will be back in action on Friday at 2:00 p.m. when they play host to the Tuskegee Golden Tigers.
