CLINTON, Miss. - The University of West Alabama Softball team opened up GSC play by sweeping their Friday Double Header against No.15 Mississippi College, winning Game One, 2-1, and Game Two, 4-1.
UWA (9-4, 2-0 GSC) came into conference play first in the GSC with a 1.51 team ERA and today's effort will only bolster that number. The duo of Madison Wright and Eleanor De Block shined once again as both held a strong Mississippi College (6-6, 0-2) offense to one run, leading the Tigers to a pair of wins.
"Today was a great day for the Tigers," said head coach Stephanie Defeo. "We had incredible pitching both games and timely hitting. We are proud of the energy and focus our team brought today!"
GAME ONE: West Alabama 2, Mississippi College 1
The reigning GSC Pitcher of the Year, Madison Wright, got the ball for West Alabama in Game One and recorded her fourth complete game of the year to lead UWA to their 2-1 victory.
In 7.0 innings of work, Wright registered seven strikeouts while only allowing one run on six hits.Â
Although she finished very strong, Mississippi College got to Wright early as the Choctaws loaded up the bases in the first. With the bases juiced, Wright picked up a big strikeout to retire the side, keeping MC off the board.
While they threatened in the first inning, Mississippi College got to Wright in the second as an RBI-Single from Bella Myers put Mississippi College on the board first.Â
The score remained 1-0 in favor of the Choctaws for a while until West Alabama's offense came alive in the sixth. Marissa Mitchell began the inning with a leadoff single, bringing up Taylor Clegg who drove Mitchell in via an RBI-Double. Now tied at one, Trinity Hatcher moved Clegg over to third with a single before Ella Watson scored Mitchell with a sac fly, giving UWA a 2-1 lead.
At this point in the game, Wright was in a zone and in the seventh, she retired MC in order to clinch her fourth win of the year and West Alabama's first conference win of the season.Â
Ann Marie Stanbridge, Clegg, Mitchell, Hatcher, and Watson recorded all of the hits for the Tigers while Wright sealed the deal, by retiring 16 of her final 18 batters faced.
GAME TWO: West Alabama 4, Mississippi College 1
Similar to Wright in Game One, De Block was masterful on the mound for the Tigers in Game Two. The junior allowed one run on two hits in route to her third complete game of the year.
After being scoreless through three innings, De Block received run support in the fourth off the bat of Clegg who belted a two-run homer to straight away center, putting the Tigers on the board.Â
Working with a two-run lead, De Block made quick work of the Choctaws in the fourth and fifth innings before MC was finally able to scrape a run across. The Choctaws' Sarah Lee scored off an error to make it a one-run game as we went to the top of the seventh.
In the seventh, West Alabama garnered a pair of insurance runs as Sara Fargo registered an RBI-Single which was followed by an RBI-Triple from Mitchell, extending the Tigers lead to 4-1. Three outs away from clinching the series, De Block retired MC in order to secure a 4-1 win for UWA.
Mitchell finished the game 2-2 at the plate with an RBI while Clegg went 2-4 along with her massive two-run homer in the fourth.
West Alabama will close out their series against No.15 Mississippi College on Sunday with first pitch slated for 1:00 p.m.
