Hatcher’s Grand Slam Powers Tigers to Series Sweep over Choctaws

Box Score

JACKSON, Miss. - The University of West Alabama Softball team completed the series sweep over No.15 Mississippi College on Sunday, winning Game Three, 6-3.

A five-run first inning, including a Grand Slam from Trinity Hatcher, put West Alabama (10-4, 3-0 GSC) ahead early and they never looked back in route to their three-run win over 15th ranked Mississippi College (6-7, 0-3 GSC).

"We knew going into this weekend would be tough," said head coach Stephanie Defeo. "MC is a good team and we prepared all week plus we had to battle some weather. I am proud that we were able to stay focused and trust our game plan!"

Eleanor De Block got the ball for the Tigers in Game Three and received a plethora of run support as the UWA offense went to work early.

In the top of the first, Riley Sullivan hit her first home run of the season to put West Alabama ahead 1-0, two batters in. Marissa Mitchell followed Sullivan's homer with a base hit while Ann Marie Stanbridge and Taylor Clegg both drew walks, bringing up Hatcher with the bases loaded. Hatcher turned on a fast ball, belting it to deep left center where it cleared the fence as the freshman's first career home run goes down as a Grand Slam that put UWA ahead, 5-0 in the first inning.

After a five-run top of the first, De Block breezed through the bottom half of the first and second innings before the Tigers added onto their lead in the third.

To begin the inning, Stanbridge hit a lead-off Triple and later scored after a Sacrifice Fly from Clegg. Now working with a 6-0 lead, De Block continued to mow down MC in the bottom half, but that would be her last inning of work as Coach Defeo went to Megan Roe out of the bullpen.

West Alabama couldn't add to their lead in the fourth but Roe kept Mississippi College at bay, retiring the side in order to progress the game to the fifth.

In the fifth inning, Roe worked around a lead-off walk, keeping MC off the board before the Choctaws offense woke up in the sixth. Mississippi College cut UWA's lead in half in the bottom half of the sixth inning, after a sacrifice fly from Madison Jenkins and a two-run double from Ashley Lightcap. Coach Defeo called on Madison Wright to get the Tigers out of the inning in which she proceeded to do.

Leading by three with three outs to secure a series sweep, Wright carved through the top of Mississippi College's order to clinch a 6-3 win.

Sullivan, Mitchell, Stanbridge, and Ella Watson all recorded a hit for the Tigers alongside Hatcher's game-changing Grand Slam.

De Block recorded the win, pitching 3.0 innings and striking out three while Wright picked up her first save of the season.

After 14 games on the road to begin the year, West Alabama is all set for their home opener this upcoming weekend as they play host to AUM for a three-game series.
