MOBILE, Ala. – West Alabama's offense came alive early and never looked back, securing a 12-8 win over Spring Hill College on Tuesday night at Sims-Galle Field.
The Tigers (9-7) used a dominant third and fourth inning to build an early 9-0 lead, highlighted by a grand slam from
Joe Watkins and a two-run homer by
Nick Wilson. West Alabama tallied 14 hits in the game, with
Eli Burwash and
Jake Goolsby leading the charge at the plate.
Goolsby started things in the third with a two-run double, followed by an RBI single from
Blake Vineyard to make it 3-0. An inning later, Watkins' grand slam blew the game open, and Wilson followed with a two-run blast to extend the lead to nine.
Spring Hill (7-8) responded in the fifth, pushing five runs behind an RBI single from Nick Hunter and a double by Jackson Bell. The Badgers cut the deficit to 10-7 in the sixth after a two-run homer from Eli Benoit, but West Alabama added insurance in the seventh on a two-run double from Burwash.
Graham Holland (1-0) earned the win for the Tigers, allowing just one hit over three scoreless innings.
Baker Green closed out the final three frames, striking out two to secure the victory.
Isaac Crabb (1-1) took the loss for Spring Hill, surrendering nine runs on 10 hits in four innings of work.
West Alabama now turns its attention to a three-game home series against Christian Brothers, beginning Friday, Feb. 28, at 5 p.m. at Tartt Field. A Saturday doubleheader will follow, with game one set for 1 p.m.
