LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The University of West Alabama Men's Basketball fell in their season finale, 78-60, to No. 3 Alabama Huntsville on Thursday night in Pruitt Hall.
UWA (14-14, 10-12 GSC) struggled from inside the arch on Thursday, shooting 28 percent from two-point range while shooting 43 percent from three in their 18-point loss to No. 3 UAH (27-1, 22-1 GSC).
West Alabama got off to a slow start offensively, shooting 1-5 from the floor and committing three turnovers in the first five minutes, leading to an 11-2 Alabama Huntsville lead. Out of the first media timeout, UAH kept the pressure on UWA, not allowing them to get many clean looks on the offensive end. The Tigers woes continued which led to them falling behind, 20-5 at the 11:48 mark of the period. Buckets from Jaylen Lemons kept West Alabama within 20 but Alabama Huntsville's Tommy Murr got into a rhythm. Murr scored 17 points in the first 14 minutes, propelling the Chargers to a 32-14 lead with 5:39 left in the half. This is where things began to trend upwards for the Tigers as a step-back three from Elliot Tulip sparked a 10-2 UWA run, cutting West Alabama's deficit to 10. Moments later, a three-point play from Tulip made it a nine-point game before UAH extended their lead back out to 11 at the break.
West Alabama shot 41 percent from the floor and 55.6 percent from three in the first half while Alabama Huntsville shot 53.3 percent from the floor and 21.4 percent from three.
Similar to the beginning of the game, the Tigers got off to a slow start offensively in the second half. Charles Fofanah and Lemons connected on threes while Thaddeus Williams buried a mid range jumper but that would be the only field goals the Tigers would convert on in the first 10 minutes of the half, catapulting the Chargers to a 68-40 lead. Murr continued to be efficient from the floor while Daniel Saylor dominated the paint as UAH extended their lead out to as much to 30 in route to a 78-60 decision.
Lemons and Elliot scored in double figures for the Tigers, with Lemons pouring in a team-high 16 points while Tulip added 11.
West Alabama will now shift their focus to postseason play as they are set to play either Montevallo or Trevecca Nazarene in the GSC Quarterfinals on Tuesday.
