CLEVELAND, Miss. - The University of West Alabama Men's Basketball team fell, 72-63, to the Delta State Statesmen on Saturday.
A slow first half and a Delta State (12-11, 8-9 GSC) run in the second half was the ingredients to UWA's (11-12, 7-10 GSC) loss on Saturday afternoon.
West Alabama came out of the gates slow, beginning the game shooting 2-10 from the field which led to a 18-8 lead for Delta State. Thaddeus Williams broke the cold spell as the senior got to the rim and converted on a heavily contested layup which jump started the Tigers' offense. Williams' bucket sparked a 12-2 UWA run, tying the game at 20 with 6:01 minutes left in the half. With both teams only able to muster up 20 points through the first 14 minutes, the defense battled continued all the way till the break with the Statesmen edging the Tigers, 27-25 at the half.
West Alabama shot 36 percent from the floor and 1-9 from three while holding Delta State to 37.9 percent and 1-12 from three. DSU's Keithean Brooks carried the Statesmen in the first half, scoring 15 of their 27 points.
After a rough offensive first half, both teams came out of the locker room and scored on majority of their possessions early as Delta State extended their lead to five a couple minutes in. Moments later, Williams drilled a three to make it a two-point game once again before DSU's Brooks and Keithean Brooks carried a 7-0 Statesmen run to give Delta State a 43-34 lead with 14:40 remaining. The trio of Brooks, Terrell, and Koby Horace gave West Alabama real trouble, particularly in this portion of the game as the three helped DSU break open a 21-point lead in a flash. Jalil Robinson and Michael McIntosh gave the Tigers great minutes and got the game back within 10 but UWA's deficit was too big to overcome as they fell, 72-63, in Cleveland.
Williams led the way with 16 points for West Alabama while McIntosh finished with 12 points on 5-6 shooting in seven minutes off the bench.
UWA will return home to Pruitt Hall on Thursday when they play host to the Union Bulldogs at 7:00 p.m.
